Artist Statement
I am a multi-disciplinary artist, but my work is unified by my misanthropic fascination with the human condition. I create sculptures and paintings, drawing inspiration from history, philosophy, science and politics. What interests me is the way our human nature lurks beneath the surface of these subjects. I am endlessly intrigued by the way our humanity tethers us through time and space.
I explore these concepts through various mediums including ceramics, textiles and acrylic paint. My work centres around emotional and slightly grotesque human faces. Both my sculptures and paintings depict unique characters that represent facets of our humanity. Although I work across various mediums, each medium informs the others and I often combine materials to create mixed media pieces.
I position my work humbly at the end of a long succession of art created by women. I am constantly mindful of the often-undervalued artistic traditions created by female artists before me. The inclusion of dolls in my practice is the most obvious example of this but all my work includes tributes to the history of women in art and craft through things like patterns, textiles and symbolism.
My goal with my work is to encourage the viewer to think deeply about the experience of being human and the fundamental truths that unite us all.
